Overview :
MARRAKECH TO SAHARA DESERT shared trip to Zagora is perfect for those who are short on time but still wish to take the opportunity to have an authentic Moroccan experience – journeying over the High Atlas Mountains, visiting the UNESCO heritage site of the Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou, exploring Ouarzazate (the gateway to the Sahara), to go camel trekking and to spend the night in a nomad camp in the stony Zagora Desert. Our budget, 2-day Zagora desert trip from Marrakech is organised in small groups of generally like-minded, independent, young travellers who share the same values.
Highlights:
Your shared, budget, 2-day desert tour from Marrakech to Zagora joins as a group and departs around 7am. The journey will begin by crossing the Tizi n Tickna Pass (2260m altitude) through the High Atlas Mountains towards the village of Ait Ben Haddou, with its fortified Kasbah classified by UNESCO as a world heritage site in 1987. With the help of a local guide you will have the opportunity to learn more about the magic and history of the place and walk to the top of the hill to admire the whole village. Afterwards we will be heading to Ouarzazate, known as the ‘Gateway to the Sahara’ to visit the beautiful Kasbah of Taourirt (the home of the former Caid Pacha Glaoui) and the Cinema Museum. After lunch, we will continue our desert trip to the village of Zagora, where camels await to take you to your Sahara Desert camp just in time to enjoy the majestic sunset and to take memorable photos. Once you arrive at the desert camp, you are welcomed by staff, given your tents and gathered together for a mint tea session. The night in the desert camp is a unique experience, sleeping under a clear sky where you can see countless stars. After a nice, home-made dinner, we gather around the campfire to enjoy a session of singing, dancing, laughing – enjoying unforgettable moments and leaving behind the rigid routines of daily life!
The second day of the Zagora Desert tour from Marrakech will begin with an early wake-up call before sunrise so you can experience the first light of the day in the Sahara Desert. After a traditional breakfast in the desert camp, you will trek back on the camels to meet your driver and your journey back to Marrakech will begin. You will once again pass through Ouarzazate, stopping here to have some free time to lunch in a local restaurant. After lunch, the journey will continue back through the High Atlas Mountains to arrive back in Marrakech around 5pm.
*Please note: the Zagora Desert does not have large sand dunes like those in Erg Chebbi or around Merzouga. Zagora is a black and rocky desert.
